CT: Litchfield County- New Preston- Aspetuck Falls (Winter)

It’s another “park-shoot & run” back of a wintry waterfall! But this one also has remains of an old stone mill. Nestled behind the stores of the small quaint town of New Preston is where you can park and see the 20 foot waterfall which once powered over 20 mills along the Aspetuck river. IContinue reading “CT: Litchfield County- New Preston- Aspetuck Falls (Winter)”

CT: Litchfield County- Washington- Hidden Valley Preserve (Winter Hike)

“I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately . . . “ starts a writing by Thoreau. This alone drew me initially to Hidden Valley Preserve for a hike several years ago. I returned to see what it may look like with the light snow and impressive cold we have had toContinue reading “CT: Litchfield County- Washington- Hidden Valley Preserve (Winter Hike)”

CT: Litchfield County- New Milford- Lover’s Leap Park (Kayaking Fall 2020)

What’s not to like about this park. Short or long hikes, beautiful overlooks, kayaking, biking, wildlife and an awesome bridge with love locks and folklore. Not to mention it’s name, Lover’s Leap. I have launched from the end of Lover’s Leap Road. It is not an easy launch site however so should not be doneContinue reading “CT: Litchfield County- New Milford- Lover’s Leap Park (Kayaking Fall 2020)”

CT: Litchfield County-Goshen- Bantam River (Kayaking & Biking)

Kayaking down the Bantam River is likely my favorite venue. It is filled with character and opportunity to enjoy the wildlife with so many photo ops! The launch site is on White’s Woods Road and holds about 7 cars. It does fill up so keep that in mind. It’s also part of the White memorialContinue reading “CT: Litchfield County-Goshen- Bantam River (Kayaking & Biking)”

CT: Litchfield County- Torrington- Burr Pond State Park (Winter)

A magical winter wonderland walk around the pond and along an icy stream is what you’ll find at Burr Pond State Park in Torrington. Nice 3 mile loop trail around the pond. I only went for a bit before the snow, ice and the sun fading had me return. Definitely a fun pond edge toContinue reading “CT: Litchfield County- Torrington- Burr Pond State Park (Winter)”

CT: Litchfield County-Plymouth- Buttermilk Falls (Winter)

Frozen and icy cascading waterfalls amongst a rocky incline! I am learning where and how to go hiking in the winter. Short hikes to waterfalls is a sound bet. If I can do it, most can! I even took out my lens ball! Beauty in all directions can best be seen in the lens ballContinue reading “CT: Litchfield County-Plymouth- Buttermilk Falls (Winter)”

CT: Litchfield County-West Cornwall Bridge

One of the last vehicular covered bridges in Connecticut, this iconic landmark spans 172 feet long and runs over the Housatonic River. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it still carries vehicular traffic on Connecticut Route 128. Designed by Ithiel Town, it has been in continuous service since 1864. I have enjoyed touringContinue reading “CT: Litchfield County-West Cornwall Bridge”

CT: Litchfield County- Kent Falls Park

Kent Falls is a 250-foot drop through a staircase of water falls of about 1/4 mile through the Housatonic River. I must admit that while I have been here several times before, I am now seeing this through my “new eyes” which makes this a completely new experience. I am intrigued by the designs createdContinue reading “CT: Litchfield County- Kent Falls Park”

CT: Litchfield County-Roxbury-Mine Hill Preserve

What were the 1800s like in CT? Mine Hill Preserve gave me a touch of that understanding. With a pair of roasting ovens, a furnace and old mines and great markings of an old town that apparently was thriving for only about a decade. As I walked I saw dogs and kids enjoying the structuresContinue reading “CT: Litchfield County-Roxbury-Mine Hill Preserve”
