NY- Hudson Valley- Rhinebeck- Ferncliff Forest

Thank you to the Hudson Valley sunset for encouraging my fearful climb up the fire tower on 9/11/21.

It felt meaningful to overcome a fear on this 20th anniversary of 9/11.

The hike to the fire tower was a quick and easy 1/2 mile or so. As I looked up the fire tower I assessed the surroundings knowing I would need to go up higher if i wanted to see the sunset over the trees.

I went up part way quite hesitantly but was following the suns reflections on the metal rods. I took some shots just over the tree line.

When others started back down from above I heard the rattle of the tower and momentarily froze and then went cautiously back down.

A couple walking their dog shared that it was an accomplishment to get half way up and next time I will make it to the top.

Next time? Will I come back? Even if I do will it be at the right time for sunset? Even still will it be with even more people and then that rattle will be more pronounced?

Next time? Mmm . . . No! Back up I go! I paused at the head of each flight and again people started down and there was that rattle that sent me down before.

A young couple admired my sons camera sharing how beautiful the pictures will be. They paused with me encouraging my completing the journey to the top. I went for it! Eureka! It was beautiful.

Back down was challenging. I focused on the metal rods of the tower so as not to look all the way down. I stepped sideways to ensure my full foot was on the step and had both hands on the railing.

Fern cliff Forest game refuge and forest preserve is located at 68 Mount Rutsen Road in Rhinebeck NY.

I coupled this visit with a bite at Terrapin in Rhinebeck. Great service, good food, lovely environment.

CT: New Haven County- East Haven- Farms River (Sunset Paddle)

A sunset paddle that took a little work but was well worth it! First shot is a panoramic shot.

Farm River, East Haven, CT , 9/10/21

On the way to the Sound I noticed the sun reflecting through the top window of a home. I paddled backward, then forward, leaned over to get it centered and then CLICK!. Cool!

Given the rocks were available to me I decided to maneuver myself out of the kayak to strike a pose 🙂

Maneuvering around the rocks was a bit of a challenge but fortunately the water was warm. The rocks can be slippery so remember to be cautious and test your footing.

Felt like I was in a different land for sure.

A small rock island holds the flag. This shot only available from the kayak.

While I rushed back to get back before dark i so enjoyed the colors as I looked back.

Final warning is when I returned to the Farms River marina it was approaching low tide. I barely made it near a dock to get out with the boat due to deep, dark, thick sludge.

I was scolded as the docks are reserved for registered boat owners. I took the scolding as I would have had absolutely no way to make it to the shore through the sludge. I will likely need to find an alternative to this site which by the way you need to pay for.

Here’s my memory blog with particulars from my first launch there for those who wish the info.

NY- Hudson Valley-Red Hook- Poets walk

From the moment I parked the car I saw people on benches reading or writing in a journal.

The walk was easy and relaxing and beautiful. The weather also happened to have been perfect not being too hot.

The walk is a lollipop look of about 2 miles. From the lot you reach the first overlook with several benches and the rustic gazebo.

Continuing down the path the approach to the next overlook was through a meadow of wildflowers and butterflies. I followed this bitterly around from flower to flower.

After the Meadow the path went into a forest setting with wooden and stone bridges following over a delicate stream.

I enjoyed a walk in nearby Rhinebeck eating at Terrapin and then seeing the sunset at Ferncliff Forest.

NY: Hudson Valley- Rhinebeck- Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome

I am honestly not an air show type of gal. Can’t say why exactly but on an average day that likely would not be something that might turn my head.

But this was a very clear day. It also happened to be the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy.

It felt appropriate to acknowledge this day with others. The Old Rhinebeck Aerodrone show did a great job in that way with the National Anthem being sung to a military officer parachuting from the plane with the American flag.

They maintain over 60 vintage bi-planes and you can also catch a ride! On this perfectly clear day I would have very much enjoyed that and feel it would have been worth the $100 for such a unique experience if I wasn’t scared of heights.

It was lovely watching the families and young kids in awe of the planes and the spectacle. They do about 30 airshows a year and I was at the right place at the right time to have the experience. Fun for the full family.

Afterwards, I was fortunate enough to catch a sunset at Ferncliff Forest fire tower afterwards and was able to see one of those bi planes.

Another meaningful and magical day.

Inspiration: Framed

My joy of taking photos originated from my father. He loved gadgets and had all the camera equipment available in the 60s when I was born – he took movies, slides, had projectors and screens and lugged it around everywhere waiting for the opportunity to arise.

When you enjoy photography it takes focus, attention and presence. Traits I acquired over the years and continue to refine.

The shot above was taken right after leaving the restrooms with a quick glance of the head. I paused recognizing Charles Island framed within the gap between the grassy hills.

It would have been so easily overlooked had I not remained present in my surroundings.

CT: Fairfield County- Darien- Pear Tree Point (Driveup Sunset)

Post Labor Day is the start of my “sunset season” as areas previously available to residents only are now available to all!

I parked and faced the sun as it fell behind a low long cloud that fell behind the trees.

As I watched people leave the lot in discouragement, I decided to sit and see if potentially the clouds might move to the right.

Yes! Eureka! There it is! There it is!

I got out of the car and started walking along the shore to capture the water stream in front of the stone wall with the peaking sun beyond.

A man started walking across the rocks to get a better view. 😉 yes the rocks with the big “Keep Off” sign spray painted on them.

I continued to the beach to find some crashing waves in anticipation of the expected rain this evening with boats bouncing beyond.

Ah then there was the gazebo which added an element of intrigue with the sound and force of the wind trying to keep me out.

Pear tree point had a lot to offer in a small package. I was so glad I stayed.

Keep in mind it’s residents only from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Cell phone shots as my camera is in the shop.

CT: Litchfield- White Memorial- Bantam River (Kayaking)

I started kayaking in 2020 during the COVID pandemic. Bantam River was one of the first places I paddled. I park at Whites Wood Road to put in.

Normally I go left into Bantam Lake. Reason being that on the right there’s a beaver dam that I could never get over.

With a lot of recent rain I decided to give it a try on Labor Day 2021. Eureka! I easily went over that Beaver Dam and had a perfect day to paddle to Little pond as well as under a series of bridges to the golf course.

I was surprised to see the leaves already start changing!

I always enjoy the waters reflection of the sky and clouds. 4-5 bridges along the route also offered its image in the water. Somehow the world just pieces together when I see that.

Wave to the golf cart!

TIP: Whites Wood Road Parking lot is small so I generally go on this paddle on a weekday when I can. However you can drop off and park down the road and walk or bike back (yes with a lock to lock your bike). It’s worth the effort.

Here’s a link to the spot on Whites Wood road as many have asked.

Paddling in the Clouds

I followed this paddle with a short hike up nearby Mount Tom. Perfect day.

CT- Litchfield County- Mount Tom State Park

Have only a quick minute? Is it a clear day?

The hike up tower trail is only a 1.3 mile loop to a cool tower with steep stairs and a 360 view.

An effort was made to clear trees to improve this view which I’m told is a must in the Fall!

The route down had moments to pause and reflect upon the rock cairns being highlighted by the sun.

Here’s one my favorite restaurants nearby as well – White Horse Tavern.

NY: Hudson Valley- Garrison-Boscobel House & Gardens

I learned of Boscobel from my cousin as an awesome venue to see Shakespeare performances in a beautiful outdoor landscape on the Hudson.

A recent trip to Boscobel surprised me as it turned out to host a farmers market on Saturdays so I had a lovely last minute picnic with fresh kalamata olive bread and mozzarella.

It was such a beautiful day I thought how perfect and then I reviewed the trail map. Well there’s a woodland walk. Ok I may be in a dress but how aggressive could it be here? Mmmm 🙂

I loved the rustic fencing, walks and gazebos found upon entry.

Suddenly I see they’re connected to Constitution Marsh! Its a steep climb downhill to get there but you’re rewarded with the falls and beautiful views of the highlands.

I wound up doing a two mile hike to include a rock scramble in a dress to see a portion of the upper part of Indians Brook waterfall. It seems I didn’t hike far enough for the full experience. But heck not so bad for an old lady in a long wrap dress!

A magical day! — at Boscobel House and Gardens. You do need reservations so I’ve included the link below as well as a picture of their trail map. Oh and as tempted as you may be you can’t pick the apples!

CT: New Haven County- Milford-Silver Sands

Silver Sands is a Connecticut State Park and one of a few in my top 5 based on the variety it offers.

On this day, I was going to turn in my good camera into Milford Photo so found myself nearby on a beautiful last Friday of summer day.

With only cell phone in hand, I started down the sand bar towards Charles Island. I consistently enjoy walking along the rocks watching the water come together from either side with the island just out of reach.

I continued along the shore and walked along a rock pier on which I had never previously balanced. I noticed it made for a nice contrast to Charles Island with the many barnacles reflecting in the bright sun. On my way back I found a dog fish shark that encountered a misfortune as it must have gotten stuck between the rocks as the tide receded.

Along the boardwalk I found a huge bench on a newly repaired deck I knew from prior visits. The bench was so big I felt like a child looking upon the view waiting for my favorite ice cream cone. (Side note- if you come this far and enjoy ice cream, consider continuing down this path past Walnut Beach for a stop at Walnut Beach creamery!).

I spent quite a bit of time sitting on the bench and decided to walk back. I took a few more pictures with my cell (recalling camera is now at Milford photo) from the wonderful boardwalk.

Another side note, they have the nicest restrooms for a public beach with skylights and all! Even that’s worth a rest stop 🙂

Even though summer is at its end, there’s more to look forward to at Silver Sands as the next season approaches. Below is my memory blog of the sunset there in the winter when it’s at a better trajectory for a nice view.

Parking is plentiful and free for CT residents.
